A Message from Sgt. Dunn & Mayor Bassett
The recent death of George Floyd at the hands of members of the Minneapolis Police Department has had an impact on every community. People are understandably outraged about this and other instances across the country. We believe it is important to examine police “use of force” procedures in our own communities.
Our policies are reviewed regularly by the Officer in Charge and updated by the Village Board. No act of racism will be tolerated. And, beyond words, we need to demonstrate that in our actions. We will continue to work at all times in cooperation with the community to promote understanding and confidence in our law enforcement. We work hard to be the best public servants we can be. We believe the police and Rhinebeck residents must be partners with shared goals, mutual trust, and respect. The police force is part of this community in ways big and small. Transparency and ongoing communication are vital elements of the relationship. The use of deadly force such as choke holds and kneeling on someone's neck as a means of constraint is not in our policy or procedures. Our officers are trained to de-escalate and end the potential of a violent confrontation. Further, our officers shall use mutual respect and pursue understanding between themselves and residents.
Village of Rhinebeck Police have serious responsibilities and are sworn to uphold the law, enforce Village/Town ordinances, New York State laws, maintain peace, protect property, and protect the personal safety of our residents. New York State Criminal Procedure Law Article 35 clearly states the regulations regarding use of force. https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/PEN/P1TCA35 .
We each encourage anyone with questions to reach out to one or both of us. Our doors are always open. We are proud of all of the officers of the Village of Rhinebeck Police for their professionalism and their dedication to the job. We want every single person in our community to live in confidence that the laws apply equally to everyone.
With deepest respect,
Gary Bassett, Mayor, Village of Rhinebeck
Sgt. Pete Dunn, Officer in Charge, Village of Rhinebeck PD
