Brush Pickup
You can find the schedule for brush pick up for your area on the Highway & Maintenance Department page.
You’ve probably seen our crews working in a pairs, a tractor with frontend loader and a dump truck. Drive safely around our crew!
Place your sticks and brush in a pile that easily fits into our tractor’s frontend loader bucket (about 4ft). The pile should be placed on the side of the road for smooth pickup by the frontend loader. We don’t want to damage grass or curbs!
Brush piles should be separate from your leaf piles (see info about our leaf pickup).
The brush is brought to our mulching area behind the Village Highway Garage, where it’s chipped and turned into mulch, for sale for you.
Leaf Pickup
You can find the schedule for leaf pick up for your area on the Highway & Maintenance Department page.
Place your leaf piles on the edge of the street, making it easier for our leaf vacuum truck to suck up. Separate your leaf and soft materials like dead flowers, from the sticks and brush. Our leaf vac truck can’t handle the sticks or hard objects!
The leafs are deposited into the same mulching area as the brush, and transformed into mulch for sale, for you.
Street Trees
Downed limb or tree in the street or sidewalk: who to report it to?
For questions about getting permission to remove a street tree or to request a street tree to be planted for free in your yard, visit our Tree Commission page.
Mulch & Compost Sales
As mentioned above, we recycle our yard waste into mulch. We have excess compost from our Village Compost pilot. Mulch and compost are for sale during non-winter months for $40/yard. Free delivery to Village residents. $50 delivery fee within the Town of Rhinebeck, and $60 delivery fee for outside of the Village/Town. Deliveries outside of the Town of Rhinebeck shall not exceed a maximum distance of 25 miles one-way. Commercial client pick-up is allowed at a rate of $40/yard with a $150 loading fee.
Order and pay by contacting the Deputy Clerk, Krissy cdenu@villageofrhinebeckny.gov.
Use of Village Hall
The public may apply to use Village Hall’s upstairs space for events. Fill out the application and return it to the Village Clerk.
Upcoming Elections
Typically, the Village Election for trustees, mayor, and Village justice happens in March when their terms are up.
Hydrant Flushing
The Village Water Department flushes hydrants on a regular basis to maintain proper working order of the system. They alert water customers of when this is coming, though, inevitably some are taken by surprise! You’ll find the schedule and info about how it works on the Water Department page.
Street Repair
The Village uses a Dutchess County Survey on road quality from 2017 to create the list of streets to pave. The county ranked the quality of all the streets in the Village and we use the ranking, traffic flow, and cost to prioritize the order that streets get paved.
The Village Highway & Maintenance Department repairs potholes and may contract with construction companies to fix severely damaged streets. You can report a dangerous pothole to the Village Clerk, who tracks them and refers them to the Highway & Maintenance Department.
Visit the Highway & Maintenance Department page to learn more about any street paving projects.
Sidewalk Repair
Per Village Code 98, the property owner is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the sidewalks along their property line, as well as the costs associated.
You may report dangerous sidewalks to the Village Clerk, who tracks them and reports them to either the Highway & Maintenance Department or the Building, Planning, and Zoning Department.
Water Main Repair
The Water Department is at the plant 7 days a week, 4am to 4pm. Call there if there’s a water main break (845-876-7331).
If there’s no answer and it’s during Village Hours 9am to 4pm, you should call Village Hall (845-876-7015), so our Water Department Clerk can create a work order and shepherd the process through the Water Department.
If it’s a water emergency during non-business hours or holidays, and no one is answering at the Water Plant, call the Water Department cell: 518-947-9500. Failing that, call Mayor Bassett at 845-235-3968.
Winter Storm Plowing & De-icing
The Village Maintenance Department is responsible for keeping the Village streets safe. The Village is not responsible for County roads that run through the Village.
The Village and Town of Rhinebeck use road salt brine on the streets as another tool to manage winter weather. Using brine cuts down on salt contamination to drinking water and the ecosystem—and saves municipalities money on buying salt.
EV Charging Stations
The Village government has received grants to have EV charging stations installed in our parking lot behind the Fire Department and in our main municipal parking lot. Now, the grant money reimbursing us for the electricity customers use at the charging stations has run out. As of June 1, 2022 (start of our fiscal year), we are receiving payments from customers to recoup costs.
Tax Payment Processing
Village taxpayers can pay their taxes via check or via this online payments portal.
