Now that spring is well and truly underway (with all of the gardens growing and the home-improvement projects that tend to come with warmer weather), the Village of Rhinebeck would like to remind all residents and property owners of some local laws:

LAWNS AND GARDENS: Please maintain your lawn and garden. See Chapter 37 for full requirements and penalties.

SIDEWALKS: Property owners are generally responsible for the maintenance of the sidewalk in front of their house, including managing vegetation (trees, bushes, hedges) that is infringing on the pedestrian right-of-way. See Chapter 98 for full requirements and penalties.

FENCES: New fences over 38 inches are required to have a building permit. See Chapter 120-14 for full requirements and penalties.

BUILDING PERMITS: Building permits are generally required for construction (even if done slowly over time by the property owner). See Chapter 39-4 for full requirements and penalties.

This is not a complete list; we encourage all property owners to familiarize themselves with our zoning code (see Chapter 120). If you have questions about the work that you would like to do to your property, please reach out to Ryan Dowden, clerk of the BPZ office, at rdowden@villageofrhinebeckny.gov.

Thank you for your partnership in ensuring that Rhinebeck remains vibrant and welcoming for all residents and visitors.

Trustee Lydia Slaby, liaison to the Building, Planning, and Zoning Department
