Harmful Algal Blooms Risk has Abated

While Riverkeeper and our partners continue to collect and analyze data, the most extensive harmful algal bloom in the Hudson River estuary in living memory appears to be dissipating. While recreational users should continue to exercise caution if they observe bright green patches or streaks, we have not observed these conditions recently, and other scientific data reinforce the conclusion that the bloom has cleared up. There is no longer any likely risk to recreational users or dogs. The operators of the drinking water treatment plants have continued to provide safe tap water throughout the event, with support from Riverkeeper, the Hudson River Drinking Water Intermunicipal Council
("Hudson 7"), and state and county Departments of Health.

If you posted signs at waterfront access points in your municipality, thank you. Riverkeeper believes they can be responsibly removed.

Watch Riverkeeper's Learning Session to learn about what harmful algal blooms are, why they matter, and what the bloom in the Hudson tells us about the river’s health.
