Oak St Oak Tree Removal

On August 12, 2021, the Village of Rhinebeck was notified that a large limb from the oak tree at the intersection of Oak and West Chestnut Streets had broken off and landed on a vehicle. This tree is in the right-of-way owned and managed by the Village, so the Tree Commission hired an arborist to examine the tree.

The results of this report are heart-breaking. This approximately 200-year-old tree is near the end of its lifecycle. For a healthy oak tree of its size to survive, it needs at least 14 inches of live wood around the circumference of the trunk. This tree has, in parts, only 6 inches. This is enough to have a full canopy but not enough to support the weight of a mature tree. Although we wish this tree could live forever, such is not the case.

The Village Board has hired Dave’s Tree Service to remove this tree on Wednesday October 6, 2021. Prior to this happening, we want to make sure that everyone who knows and loves this tree has an opportunity to thank it for its life.

Please be aware that the intersection of Oak Street and West Chestnut Street will be closed for most of the day, beginning at 7:30 am.
